What is rapid injection molding?

Rapid injection molding is standard thermoplastic injection molding built on faster, cheaper tooling — typically aluminum or pre-hardened soft steel — that a shop can machine in 2–4 weeks instead of the 8–12 weeks a hardened production tool takes. The parts themselves are identical to conventional injection molding; what changes is the tool build and its lifetime.

You still pay a five-figure tooling bill, you still commit to a frozen geometry, and you still need a first-article approval loop before production. Rapid molding shortens the runway — it doesn't remove it.

Design-freeze risk

The hidden cost of any injection-molded approach — rapid or not — is the requirement that your design is done. Once the tool is cut, every geometry change is a mod cost or a new tool. Teams routinely find a fault in the first 200 field units that would have been trivial to fix in CAD, but now costs weeks and thousands of dollars because it lives in aluminum.
